The Great Camera Shootout(s)

by Jeff S on April 6, 2010

The Urge Productions team began shooting HD video with the Canon 5D Mark II when it was first released. Since then it seems like it is the new “gold rush” for the video & photography professional. Disruptive technologies always have an initial gold rush feel until folks realize it is just another technology, and it won’t save the world (or the financial system). It does however make being a creative professional much more affordable.  It seems video & graphics technology is now in step with Moore’s Law.

VFX Supervisor Marc Weigert reports on the first side-by-side ARRI ALEXA (prototype) and RED Mysterium-X camera test and comes to some game changing conclusions.  Screen shots and a full report are available at HD User Magazine.

In another Shootout, Zacuto presents a non biased, non sponsored shootout between a variety of DSLR, Film and HD Cameras.  To keep things fair, they decided to use Zeiss lenses on all the tests (even on the Canon bodies).  Correct, Canon’s highly regarded L series lenses were not used.
